A FAMOUS Bollywood singer and composer, who was known widely as the ‘Disco King’, has passed away at the age of 69.
Bappi Lahiri, died yesterday (February 15), at hospital in Mumbai.
The musical legend, who was famous for popularising the use of synthesised disco music in Indian cinema, had suffered multiple health issues in the weeks leading up to his death.
However his official cause of death was due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), according to the doctor who was treating him, and he died shortly before midnight.
In an official statement, his family expressed their sadness.
“This is a deeply sad moment for us, our beloved Bappi Da has left for heavenly abode last midnight,” they said.
“We are seeking love and blessings for his soul.”
Mr Lahiri found success over the course of his five decade career, with Bengali films like Amar Prem, Mandira, Badnam, Aamar Tumi.
He also contributed significantly to the soundtrack of Bollywood movies in the 80s and 90s.
He achieved his first break in the music industry through the 1973 film Nanha Shikari.
A host of stars have paid tribute to Bappi online, including popular actress Huma Saleem Qureshi, and singer Shreya Ghoshal.
“I will always remember you as the true rock star of our country, she said online.
“Your music, your personality, everything about you dada, was iconic. Ever so loving, warm, charming and humble. I have been so fortunate to have had your blessings through my career and got several opportunities to sing for and with you. Bappi da, you have gone too soon. Will miss you terribly.”
“There was only one Bappi Da,” added Ms Qureshi via a statement on her Instagram account.
“I was blessed to have witnessed and danced to your music. Thank you for the memories. Farewell Disco King.”
Bappi’s last rites will be held tomorrow morning at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Mumbai, on arrival of his musician-son Bappa Lahir from LA.
