An event is being held tomorrow in Leicester to support people who have been diagnosed with younger onset dementia – classified as those under the age of 65.
Carers, family and friends of those who have been diagnosed with the condition are also invited to the event, which will take place tomorrow (Wednesday, November 23), at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.
Hosted by the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) Programme Board, the event will take place in the Community Hub at the venue from 6pm until 8.30pm.
It will be officially opened by people living with dementia, as well as involving Samantha Clarke, chair of LLR Dementia Friendly Communities.
Visitors to the event will also be able to have their say about the challenges they face living with the condition.
The LLR Dementia Strategy outlines there are 13,372 people living with dementia across the region, of which 269 have been diagnosed with younger onset dementia.
This event will assist local authorities and the NHS to provide improved dementia services.
Attendees will also have the chance to speak to healthcare professionals, who provide valuable support within the community, and hear keynote speakers discuss their experiences with the condition.
Councillor Christine Radford, county council cabinet member for adults and communities, said: “As well as the formal consultation to help develop much-needed tailored support across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear from people living with dementia, who come from all walks of life.
“It will also give attendees the chance to connect with others and form a support network.”
Professionals who will be attending the event include Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, which providea a commissioned dementia support service.
Lisa Goodman, dementia support service manager, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, said: “The team is looking forward to participating in the event – we have a dedicated member of staff who specialises in working with people with younger onset dementia.
“It’s vital that we offer support tailored to this group’s needs, such as support groups in the evening as often people with younger onset dementia are still of working age.”
