His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland is raising funds to get a larger-than-life statue of Queen Elizabeth II erected in Oakham, to demonstrate the county’s “pride and gratitude” for her life and service.
The proposed Rutland landmark, would stand proudly outside the library in the town of Oakham, says Sarah Furness, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, who is currently raising funds to bring the idea to fruition.
“Her late Majesty served us steadfastly for 70 years and her death felt like a personal bereavement to many.
“It would therefore be particularly appropriate to create a lasting, permanent Rutland memorial to Her Majesty,” she said.
“Rutland has no important statuary. I therefore hope we will all contribute to a bronze memorial of Her Majesty. It will be situated in the most prominent position in out county town where it can be seen for generations to come.”
Ideally, Ms Furness would like to see a full sized bronze statue of Her Majesty erected in the town. However, this will depend on the amount of money that’s raised, she says.
The sculptor suggested for the project is Hywel Partly, who’s a member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors and the Royal Society of Sculptors.
“His work is much sought after and he will produce a gracious naturalistic tribute to our much loved Queen,” she said.
“The plan is to create either a bas relief as we did for the Duke of Edinburgh, or a bust on a plinth or possibly a full size bronze statue. Some such a memorial will definitely be erected, but its nature will inevitably depend on the funds available.”
The current proposal is that it will be located outside the Library in the County Town of Oakham, clearly visible to all who pass through the town.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away last September 8, at the age of 96.
Her son King Charles II, is set to be Coronated later this year (May 6), at Westminster Abbey.
