Leicester residents are being encouraged to get moving and try something new this weekend — completely free of charge — as part of the city’s celebrations for National Fitness Day.
All seven Active Leicester leisure centres, run by Leicester City Council, will be offering free gym sessions, fitness classes, and swimming on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September. It’s a great opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels to explore what their local centre has to offer.

Free swimming will be available at Aylestone, Braunstone, Cossington Street, Evington, New Parks, and Spence Street Sports Centres, while Leicester Leys Leisure Centre will also be participating in the wider programme of activities.
In addition to leisure centre access, people can also enjoy a free round of pitch & putt or footgolf at Humberstone Heights Golf Course over the weekend.
A wide range of free activities will be on offer, including HIIT classes, yoga, circuits, and group cycling, with no experience necessary. Whether you’re looking to kickstart a new fitness routine or simply try something different, there’s something for everyone.
To add a bit of fun competition, each centre will take part in the Laps of Leicester Challenge. From 24–28 September, visitors can contribute by running on a treadmill, swimming lengths, or cycling on a static bike — with every 52km completed counting as one ‘lap’ of Leicester. The leisure centre logging the most laps will be crowned the winner.
Cllr Vi Dempster, Assistant City Mayor for Public Health, said: “We’re proud to still provide a wide network of council-run leisure centres across Leicester. While many local authorities have closed theirs or handed them to the private sector, we remain committed to offering inclusive and affordable facilities.
“This free weekend is a fantastic chance to try out a class, swim, or round of golf — whether you’re new to fitness or just want to try something different. If you enjoy your visit, ask about our great value memberships to help you stay active all year round.”
No booking is needed for gym access, pitch & putt, or footgolf, but pre-booking is recommended for swimming and fitness classes to guarantee a spot.
