Hidden Heritage Sites Open Their Doors for Free During National Festival

Some of Leicester’s most intriguing historic sites – usually closed to the public – will be opening their doors for free as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days festival.

Running from 12 to 21 September 2025, the national celebration offers a rare opportunity to explore the city’s rich architectural and cultural history, with more than 30 local organisations hosting a variety of tours, talks, exhibitions, and events.

Among the highlights is an exclusive tour of the Leicester Museums collections store, where visitors can view rarely-seen artefacts guided by expert curators.

A behind-the-scenes look at Leicester Cathedral will reveal some of its hidden treasures, while the Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage is marking the 160th anniversary of its historic building with special guided tours.

Over at the YMCA, an interactive exhibition dives into the fascinating folklore, myths, and legends of Leicestershire. Curated by the self-titled Mythsorians, the display features tales like the eerie Black Annis, the curse of the Humber Stone, the ghostly Nine o’Clock Horses, and even the spirit said to haunt the YMCA itself.

These brand-new additions for 2025 will join long-time festival favourites such as:

  • Glenfield Railway Tunnel tours
  • Behind-the-scenes experiences at Abbey Pumping Station
  • Open days at the Jain Centre, Leicester Synagogue, and Leicester Secular Hall

City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “Each year, Heritage Open Days gives us a fantastic chance to uncover the stories behind Leicester’s historic buildings. It’s inspiring to see so many venues taking part – including exciting new additions – and I’m especially grateful to the volunteers whose passion makes this possible.”

Cllr Vi Dempster, Assistant City Mayor for Culture, added: “This is an open invitation for everyone to connect with Leicester’s past. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, organisations, and venues, we can share our city’s heritage not just during the festival, but throughout the year.”

Heritage Open Day booklets are available to collect from locations across the city and at the Visit Leicester information centre (inside the King Richard III Visitor Centre). You can also explore the full programme online via the Leicester Museums website.
