Leicester’s professional basketball team has pledged its support for the city’s National Year of Reading campaign, promising to use its platform to help inspire more young people to pick up a book.
The Leicester Riders say they are proud to be backing the initiative and will work throughout the year to encourage fans, local schools and the wider basketball community to recognise the importance of reading.

Rob Jarram, head of the Leicester Riders Foundation, said the club sees reading as fundamental to young people’s development.
“As a club deeply rooted in the Leicester community, we are committed to inspiring the next generation both on and off the court,” he said.
“Reading plays a vital role in developing young minds, building confidence, improving focus, and supporting mental wellbeing. Taking time to read can help young people relax, learn new skills, and open up new opportunities for their future.
“The Riders are proud to stand behind this city-wide initiative and encourage all of our supporters to get involved. Together, let’s inspire a love of reading and continue building a brighter future for young people across Leicester.”
The club will promote the campaign at games and through its community work, reinforcing the message that strong literacy skills are key to success in both sport and everyday life.
Assistant city mayor for libraries, Cllr Vi Dempster, welcomed the partnership.
“The Leicester Riders are a fantastic asset to our city and we’re delighted to have them on board for our National Year of Reading,” she said. “This year is about reminding everyone of the joy of reading, whatever you want to read about.
“Our libraries have so much to offer, including books, e-books, digital resources, audiobooks, study spaces and regular activities for young people and families. They are welcoming, inclusive spaces designed to support learning and creativity.
“It’s easy to get involved in the National Year of Reading – just visit your local library and choose a book.”
The National Year of Reading is led by the Department for Education in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, aiming to spark a lifelong love of reading among children and young people.
