Although it is not known has many staff members will be affected by the closer, Sainsbury’s said that that they are supporting those who are.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Our Leicester Humberstone Gate Supermarket will close this weekend. We understand this will be an unsettling time for those affected and we are to support them in every way we can.

“For further background, we regularly review our estate and the decision to close a store is never taken lightly and is based on a range of factors,” they added.

“Customers can continue to shop with us at other nearby stores, including Leicester North and Fosse Park Superstores.”
