Leicester Set to Celebrate South Asian Cuisine as National Thali Week Returns

Leicester will once again take centre stage in a nationwide food celebration as National Thali Week returns for its second year, shining a light on the richness and diversity of South Asian cuisine.

Running from 6–12 January, the initiative will see restaurants across the city serving specially prepared thalis -traditional platters that bring together a variety of dishes in a single meal, reflecting regional flavours, balance and hospitality.

The campaign is led by Romail Gulzar, founder of Leicester’s Pukaar Group, who says the thali remains one of the most meaningful ways to experience South Asian food culture.

“A thali is often the first way people experience food at home – it’s generous, thoughtful and designed to be shared,” he said. “National Thali Week is about celebrating that tradition while giving restaurants the space to showcase their own regional roots.”

Following a successful launch last year, Leicester has again been highlighted as a key location for the week-long celebration, reflecting the city’s reputation for vibrant independent eateries and long-established South Asian food communities.

Diners can expect a wide range of thalis throughout the week, from classic vegetarian platters to meat-based and modern interpretations, with organisers encouraging people to explore new restaurants and support local businesses during the quieter winter period.

Mr Gulzar added: “Leicester’s food scene has always been built on diversity and pride. Bringing National Thali Week back here feels like a natural fit.”
