UK Asian Film Festival comes to Leicester for the ninth time

The UK Asian Film Festival is coming to Leicester’s Phoenix Cinema & Arts Centre this week, showcasing a rich programme of films.

The event, taking place between Thursday 9 May and Sunday, May 12, will reflect on the twin forces of longing and belonging. It is the ninth time the festival has come to Leicester.

Films being shown as part of the festival, will centre on these themes. They include ‘We are Faheem & Karun’, being shown on Thursday (May 8) and Slaves of the Empire on Friday (May 9). Both of these films will be accompanied by questions and answer sessions with the respective directors.

Another highlight of the festival will be ‘Jai Mata Ji – Let’s Rock,’ – a fun filled Gujarati comedy, which will be shown on Saturday, May 10.

Speaking about the festival Samir Bhamra, its creative director, urged people not to miss this ‘rich programme of films.’

“This year’s UKAFF gala screenings are deeply personal, visually stunning and utterly unmissable,” he said.

“They demand to be seen on the big screen. If you have ever loved, lost, or longed to find where you truly belong – come, witness, and feel these stories unfold in the cinema, where they are meant to be experienced.”

Speaking about this year’s theme, Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry MBE, the festival’s founder and director said: “The need to belong is a fundamental force that binds us all, propelling us to overcome adversity, find strength in our challenges, and create spaces where we can truly thrive.

“At the UK Asian film festival we honour the indomitable spirit of filmmakers who have defied the odds to bring their artistic visions to life. Their stories are powerful reminders of the importance of acceptance, unity and the transformative impact of doing what is right.

“This festival not only celebrates diverse narratives but also builds bridges between communities, inspiring us all to connect, reflect and rise together through the magic of cinema.”

The Asian Film Festival is described as a platform for emerging talent, celebrating South Asian culture, history, arts, storytelling and self-expression.
