Leicester’s Sikh community marked a momentous weekend with two vibrant celebrations that brought thousands together in a powerful display of faith, culture, and unity.
The city’s annual Nagar Kirtan—a traditional Sikh parade—once again filled Leicester’s streets with colour and devotion. Beginning at Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Holy Bones, the procession wound its way through the city centre, with thousands of participants joining in singing hymns, sharing food, and performing seva (selfless service) along the route. The parade, a highlight of the Sikh calendar, culminated back at the Gurdwara, where the community gathered for prayers and a communal meal (langar).
The Nagar Kirtan not only celebrates the Sikh faith but also promotes values of equality, service, and community spirit. Spectators lined the streets, enjoying the lively atmosphere and learning about Sikh traditions.
This year, Leicester made history by hosting its first-ever outdoor Khalsa Sajna Divas celebration at Spinney Hill Park. The event, also known as a Vaisakhi Samagam (gathering), commemorates the founding of the Khalsa in 1699, and attracted an estimated 10,000 people from across the UK—a testament to the city’s thriving Sikh community and its welcoming spirit.
Mukhtiar Singh, stage secretary at Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara, shared his joy with Brit Punjabi, saying, “It was wonderful to see so many gather to mark this important day. The unity and enthusiasm among attendees was truly inspiring.”
The celebration featured prayers, cultural performances, and a range of community activities, offering something for all ages. Attendees enjoyed traditional music, food stalls, and exhibitions showcasing Sikh heritage and values.
Organisers are hopeful that the landmark Khalsa Sajna Divas gathering will become an annual tradition in Leicester, further strengthening community bonds and sharing Sikh heritage with the wider public.
