LOUGHBOROUGH HOSTS WELCOME EVENT FOR UKRAINIAN REFUGEES

An event to help welcome Ukrainian refugees to the Charnwood community was held recently in Loughborough.

The event, which was hosted by Loughborough Polish Club, was an opportunity to welcome refugees who have had to leave their homes in Ukraine following the Russian invasion. Hosts who have opened their homes to refugees through the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme also attended.

It was a chance for the families and hosts to connect with others and the wider community.

Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, Charnwood Borough Council’s lead member for community support, said: “I would like to thank everyone who attended the welcome event and it was pleasing to see so many people there.

“We have had some excellent feedback and we hope to organise more events and activities for both hosts and their guests in the coming months. We will also continue to signpost people to the various guidance and support available.

“Charnwood is proud to stand with the people of Ukraine at this extremely difficult time.

“I would also like to thank Loughborough Polish Club for kindly hosting the event and doing so much to send support and supplies to those still in Ukraine.”

The event, on June 22, was attended by about 90 people.

One of the hosts who attended said: “The event was excellent, and our guests found it helpful and optimistic, as did we. We are very impressed by all of the input and interaction with the Charnwood team with regards to refugees, rooms and Ukraine support so far.”
