A Leicestershire woman is celebrating remarkable progress in her recovery after suffering a severe leg injury in a horse?riding accident last summer.
Nicola Turner sustained a complex leg fracture in June 2025 and underwent surgery at Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI). Surgeons fitted an external fixation frame to stabilise the fracture and support the healing process -a device often used in cases where bones require long?term, precise alignment.

As part of her rehabilitation, Nicola has been attending a specialist monthly exercise class run by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust’s (UHL) physiotherapy team. The class, designed for patients with external fixation frames, offers personalised exercise plans, one?to?one physiotherapy support, and a chance to connect with others recovering from traumatic injuries.
Nicola’s progress has been significant. Since her first session, when she arrived in a wheelchair, she has built enough strength and confidence to transition from wheelchair use to crutches and now walks independently. Her long?term goal is to make a full recovery and return to riding.
Reflecting on her journey, Nicola said: “I remember my very first session when I was in a wheelchair and I was asked to stand up. I didn’t know how to do it. My brain and body were disconnected.
“The sessions have really helped me, and I’ve seen myself improve. I feel like these classes help with emotional wellbeing too. Everyone who attends this class has had a traumatic injury, and it’s really helpful to talk to people about it. This facility really enables recovery.”
Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Chris Lillie, who has supported Nicola throughout her rehabilitation, praised her determination.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Nicola to help her reach her goals. She puts a lot into the classes and has shown a positive mindset throughout her recovery,” he said.
UHL’s specialist classes continue to provide both physical and emotional support for patients facing long and complex recoveries—something Nicola says has been vital in helping her rebuild her independence and confidence.
