PLANS FOR NEW LEISURE FACILITY IN LEICESTERSHIRE TOWN

Plans have been submitted for a new bowling alley and indoor golf facility in a Leicestershire town, in the hope that it will improve its night-time economy.

Gylo, which owns Coalville’s Belvoir Shopping Centre, said it hoped to build the new bowling alley on land to the rear of the shopping centre, with indoor golf and a restaurant on the first floor.

The company also plans a new residential development of about 28 town centre apartments.

In an application submitted to North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), Nick Harcus of Lathdale, the development consultants for Gylo, said: “We’re delighted to finish the first phase improvement works to the shopping centre and now we are moving on with leisure-led revitalisation with a new bowling alley which I am sure will be very popular in Coalville.

He added Gylo was taking moves “to reverse long years of underinvestment and also bring new vibrancy”.

“Gylo particularly wanted to promote more night time use of the town centre,” he added.

“Currently, the closest bowling alley operator is the Hollywood Bowl in Leicester, which is approximately 13 miles and over 23 minutes’ drive from the application site. Similarly, there are no indoor miniature golf operators in Coalville, with the nearest such facilities being located in Leicester city centre,” Gylo said in its planning documents.

“The application proposal will deliver a range of benefits for the residents of Coalville and the surrounding areas. These benefits include the provision of additional leisure (including food and drink) facilities to serve the users of Coalville town centre and to enhance local consumer choice, the introduction of 28 new residential studio apartments and the creation of new jobs and staff training/development opportunities,” they added.

A spokesman for NWLDC confirmed that the application had been received and would be decided at a later date.
