Road safety improvements begin on Orwell Drive

Work to improve a busy road in north-west Leicester and make it safer for walkers, wheelers and cyclists is now underway.

Leicester City Council has started construction of a new off-road cycle lane and upgraded footpaths on Orwell Drive, between the junctions with Bennion Road and Amadis Road. The project is expected to take up to ten weeks to complete.

During the roadworks, Orwell Drive will operate as one-way only, with a short, well-signposted diversion in place. Access to Amadis Road will be maintained throughout the programme.

Further resurfacing is planned for February, when the Amadis Road junction will need to close to traffic for up to one day. A raised table will also be created at the junction of Amadis Road and Orwell Road to help give priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

The scheme forms the latest phase of the Connecting Leicester programme, which has already delivered improvements on Bennion Road and nearby Anstey Lane to create more attractive routes for active travel.

A city council spokesperson said the highway upgrades would benefit all road users. They added: “Every effort will be made to minimise disruption while the works are carried out.”

The project is expected to cost around £600,000 and will be fully funded by Government through the Connecting Leicester initiative.
