UKHSA Urges Eligible Communities to Get Vaccinated Ahead of Diwali

As the Festival of Lights approaches, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is calling on eligible members of the public to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations in time for Diwali on 20 October, to help protect themselves and others during the celebrations and throughout the winter season.

Health officials warn that both viruses spread more easily during colder months, particularly when people gather indoors—something common during Diwali celebrations. Getting vaccinated now gives time for full protection to build, which can take up to two weeks.

“Diwali is a cherished time for families and friends to come together, but it also marks the start of flu and COVID-19 season,” said Dr Anjali Pai, Consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA. “We urge eligible individuals, particularly within the Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities, to prioritise their health and book their vaccinations early.”?

The NHS flu vaccine is available for:

  • People aged 65 and over
  • Under-65s with health conditions
  • Pregnant women
  • Children aged 2–3 (via GP) and school-aged children (offered at school)
  • Health and social care workers
  • Carers and care home residents

The COVID-19 vaccine is available for:

  • Adults aged 75 and over
  • Immunosuppressed individuals
  • Residents in care homes for older adults

In addition, this year’s winter vaccination programme includes the RSV vaccine for:

  • Pregnant women (to protect both mother and baby)
  • Adults aged 75–79

Children will receive the nasal flu spray, a simple and painless alternative to injection. For those unable to receive the nasal spray for medical or religious reasons, an injectable option is available.

“Each year, thousands of children are hospitalised with flu, especially under 5s,” said Pai. “Vaccinating them not only protects the child, but helps reduce spread to vulnerable family members like grandparents or babies.”

Vaccinations are now being offered across England via:

  • Local GP practices
  • Participating pharmacies
  • Community drop-in clinics

Appointments can be booked online at nhs.uk/bookflu or nhs.uk/bookcovid, through the NHS App, or by calling 119.

Dr Amanda Doyle, NHS National Director for Primary and Community Services, added: “It’s quick and easy to get protected, and it makes a real difference—especially if you’re planning to celebrate with loved ones. Don’t wait.”

Kirit Mistry from South Asian Health Action echoed the message: “As we prepare for Diwali, let’s also take steps to protect our health. A simple vaccine can help ensure we celebrate safely and joyfully.
