A special event will see a canal lock near Abbey Park decorated with lights and illuminated sculptures as part of Leicester’s Diwali celebrations.
Taking place on Friday 21st October, the event will include floating lights and music, and has been organised by The Canal & River Trust.
Visitors will be able to create their own paper boat and place it in the water so that it floats alongside specially-crafted paper boats for the celebrations.
Taking place at Lime Kiln Lock off Abbey Park Road in Leicester, the event will have spiced teas, traditional sweets and savoury snacks all available for attendees to enjoy.
“We can’t wait to get involved with the Diwali celebrations and hope that lots of local people come down to the riverside and discover all that their waterways have to offer,” said Abi Kirk, community roots engagement coordinator for the Canal & River Trust. “More than a third of people in Leicester live within just 1km of the river yet many may not know that they have this most amazing community space right on their doorsteps.”
Free arts activities are also being held at Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre in the week leading up to the waterside Diwali festival. This will see children aged 7 and above create special paper boats for the event.
The celebrations at Lime Kiln Lock take place between 5pm and 7.30pm on Friday 21st October.
