Organisers of the first Holi celebration to take place at Rushey Fields Recreation Ground are hailing the event a huge success.
Hundreds of people from across the community, including all the local ward councillors, took part in the celebrations which were organised by the neighbouring Shree Hanuman Temple on Melton Road.
A huge bonfire was lit to signify the burning of the wicked ‘Holika’ who tried to kill her nephew ‘Prahlad and aims to show how good triumphs over evil.
Holi which marks the arrival of spring and the end of winter is also known as the festival of colours with many of the devotees celebrating by throwing powder paint over each other.
Rajesh Patel, Secretary, Shree Hanuman Temple said: “It was a joyous occasion and wonderful to see people of all ages having fun at such a significant event in our calendar.
“It was also an honour to welcome our local councillors who have all been very supportive.
“We are thankful to all the residents of Rushey Mead and the surrounding areas who attended the event and to all the volunteers who helped to make the festival a success.”
