Leicester Introduces New Membership Scheme for Town Hall Bike Park

A new annual membership scheme is being launched at Leicester’s Town Hall Bike Park in an effort to make cycling into the city centre more convenient and secure.

From Monday, 7 July, cyclists using the secure bike parking facilities in Town Hall Square will need to sign up for an Active Leicester Cycle Hub membership. The new system is part of a wider initiative to improve cycling infrastructure across the city.

The membership will cost £10 per year, though anyone who signs up before the launch date will receive the first 12 months free. Members will be required to scan their card when leaving their bike in the park. Daily parking remains free for members, but bikes left overnight will incur a £5 charge.

Existing Active Leicester members can add Cycle Hub access to their current account with ease.

Councillor Geoff Whittle, Assistant City Mayor for Environment and Transport, welcomed the change, saying:
“Secure and reliable bike parking is a really important element of encouraging more people to cycle into the city centre. The new membership scheme will make parking quicker and easier, while continuing to provide excellent value for money.”

Membership can be arranged:

The city council plans to roll out the new membership scheme to all secure cycle hubs across Leicester, including St Margaret’s Bus Station, Park and Ride locations, the railway station, and various leisure centres.

The Town Hall Bike Park has proven increasingly popular, with over 30,000 bikes parked last year. That number is expected to rise to more than 35,000 in 2025.

Opening hours for the Town Hall Bike Park are:

  1. Monday to Friday: 8am – 6.30pm
  2. Saturday: 8.30am – 6pm
  3. Sunday: 10am – 4pm

The council hopes the new scheme will support more sustainable travel choices and help ease congestion in the city centre.
