A new Leicestershire country park on the former site of Nailstone Colliery has seen nearly 30,000 trees planted at the site.
The new trees at the Nailstone Platinum Jubilee Country Park will be added to Leicestershire County Council’s interactive tree map, which shows the number of trees which have been planted towards the target of 700,000 – a tree for every person in Leicestershire.
There is also an environmental education centre on the site, which is available or use by schools and groups.
“We want to encourage people across the county to plant their own trees and then record them using the online tree recording form. These new trees will then contribute towards our ‘Tree for every person’ ambitions, for 700,000 new trees planted by 2030, and help us on the longer road towards being a net zero county by 2045,” said Gordon McFarlane, Assistant Director of Corporate Resources at Leicestershire County Council.
“We’ve made an excellent start, with around 250,000 trees planted so far, and our free tree schemes have been in high demand, but there’s still a fair way to go. New woodlands like Nailstone Platinum Jubilee Country Park are helping to make Leicestershire greener, and at the same time, providing people with a place to enjoy the outdoors and learn more about the environment.”
Jez Perkins, Senior Contracts Manager at Maydencroft, which manages the site, invited Leicestershire County Council counterparts to visit the park during National Tree Week.
He said: “We’re proud of the Platinum Jubilee Country Park at Nailstone and want people from across the county to visit and use the education centre. The huge number of trees that have been planted there have been added to the council’s interactive map, and will help towards the ambitions to have a tree for every person in the county.
“If you have a group or class that could use the education centre, do get in touch and come and see for yourself what a fantastic facility we have.”

Nailstone Platinum Jubilee Country Park is managed by the Grounds and Estates Division at environmental company Maydencroft and is part of a larger site associated with the adjacent supermarket distribution centre.
