Charnwood Council Leader Calls for Urgent Action After Recent Flooding

The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Councillor Jewel Miah, has written to several key agencies following the recent flooding in the borough.

Cllr Miah has reached out to Leicestershire County Council, the Environment Agency, and the Canal and River Trust after approximately 300 homes and businesses were affected by flooding in Charnwood earlier this month.

In his letter, Cllr Miah says: “I am writing to you in the wake of the recent flooding in Charnwood in January 2025, which occurred almost exactly one year after the flooding caused by Storm Henk.

“Both of these events were major incidents, causing significant distress to residents, businesses, and the wider community.

“As both a local councillor in an area heavily impacted by the flooding and as Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, I fully understand the serious concerns and frustrations of those affected.

“Therefore, I am urging all agencies involved to engage with the issue and take immediate action.

“We need concrete steps from the agencies responsible for preventing and reducing the impact of flooding.

“I understand that some measures may take time to implement, and in the interim, we must do everything possible to help our communities become more resilient to flooding. However, it is clear that urgent action is required.

“I also reiterate my call for the government to open the Flood Framework and provide grants and support to help local residents and businesses.”

In the open letter, Cllr Miah outlines his priorities, including completing investigations into last year’s flooding, confirming any new investigations, outlining flood prevention strategies for the worst-hit areas, and ensuring an ongoing commitment from the Council to collaborate with others in addressing the flooding issue.

The letter also includes a list of locations where action plans are being requested, with updates to include areas such as Barkby, Rearsby, Cossington, and Thrussington.
