DANGEROUS DRIVER JAILED AFTER SPEEDING AND RAMMING A POLICE CAR IN LEICESTER

A man who drove dangerously through two busy Leicester estates has been jailed for 30 months.

In May this year, Kym Aley failed to stop for officers which resulted in a police pursuit of his vehicle through the Saffron Lane and Eyres Monsell estates.

During the four-minute pursuit, 20-year-old Aley was at times driving at a speed of more than 80mph in a 30mph area, at one point narrowly missing a cyclist.

He reversed into a police car before continuing his journey, driving over grass verges and pavements before abandoning the car in The Newry.

Officers located Aley in a nearby shop and arrested him. When he was searched officers found drugs and a machete was also recovered from the car.

He was subsequently charged with possession with intent to supply class A drugs (cocaine), possession of a bladed article, dangerous driving, driving without a license, driving without insurance and failing to provide a specimen.

At his first magistrates court appearance Aley, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to all the charges.  At Leicester Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday, June 29) he was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

He was also given a 38 month driving ban with an extended re-test.

Detective Constable Fiona Day was the investigating officer.  She said: “Aley drove at dangerous speeds through some very busy areas with pedestrians, including children, and other vehicles nearby.

“He deliberately reversed his car in to the police vehicle, luckily the officers sustained very minor impact injuries.  When he was arrested and during his interview he showed no remorse for what he had done and even smirked at officers when he was questioned.

“Due to the overwhelming evidence Aley had no choice but to plead guilty to all the offences.  We hope the custodial sentence he has now received gives him an opportunity to mend his ways and consider his actions.”
